Elected in November 2014, Joe serves on the DC State Board of Education, representing Ward 6.
Joe brings extensive education policy and community activism to the position. Professionally, Joe currently serves as Executive Director of Companies for Causes, a non-profit organization working to engage socially-minded CEOs of closely held small and mid-sized companies to make a collective impact on our community. Our organization's first project - All Roads Lead to Eastern - is to designed to improve student achievement at Eastern Senior High School's community of schools and to prepare Eastern graduates for success in college and the workforce. Previously, Joe worked to supported efforts to reduce poverty and expand early education. Overall, Joe has 15 years of experience in public policy, community organizing and government relations.
In Ward 6, Joe has worked with community members from across the Ward to develop and implement the Ward 6 Middle School Plan. He has served on the Eliot-Hine Middle School collaboration team and LSAT, the Office of the State Superintendent of Education's (OSSE) Title I Committee of Practitioners and the board of two non-profits focused on expanding after-school programming. Most importantly, Joe is a [proud] father of 4th and 2nd grade students at Maury Elementary School and faces the same challenges as other parents as they choose schools for their families.
Joe graduated from the University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign. He earned a masters degree in political science from Illinois and an MBA from the University of Maryland @ College Park. Joe lives a few blocks north of Lincoln Park with his wife, Amy, his two children and his two dogs. You'll often see Joe out in the neighborhood - at Eastern Market or community events, cheering on the Nats, volunteering in our schools, or playing sports with his kids.
